Ethiopian athlete Demisse spoken to about political protest, says IPC President

IPC President Sir Philip Craven says Tamiru Demisse has been spoken to having yesterday become the latest Ethiopian athlete to stage a political protest in Rio after crossing the finish line in the men's 1,500m T13 event.

Demisse crossed his arms above his head as he went across the line in the runners-up spot, taking silver behind Algeria’s Abdellatif Baka.

The symbol is in reference to the political persecution of the Oromo ethnic group by the Government back home.

Tamiru went on to repeat the gesture during the ceremony to receive his medal.

"He's been told very, very clearly that political statements are definitely hors de combat in the Paralympic Games, as they are in the Olympic Games," said Sir Philip.

A similar gesture was made by Demisse’s compatriot Feyisa Lilesa last month, when crossing the line in second in the Olympic men’s marathon race.
