Huang Xing of China won his first Paralympic gold medal on his debut appearance at the Games with success in the mixed 25 metres pistol SH1 competition.

The 30-year old performed consistently well all day, winning one qualifying event and finishing third in the other.

Xing then finished second in the semi-finals before beating Joackim Norberg of Sweden 7-5 in the gold medal match.

"It is my first Paralympic Games and first medal and I am very happy and very excited," said Xing.

"I have completed my goal and achieved my dream come true.

"It's an honour to win for China."

Norberg proved to be a tough opponent as he led 2-0 after the first series and 4-2 after the third, before Xing composed himself and eventually gained control with five points in the final three series to Norberg's one.

"I didn't expect anything, I just wanted to come in and perform my best," Norberg said.

"I know that if I focus on what I do best I can hit the podium.

"Xing was shooting really well.

"It seemed I had quite a lot of shots out of the ring.

"It's really small margins and he got them in and that's what counts."

The bronze medal in the competition was won by Lee Ju Hee of South Korea as he claimed his second medal in Rio de Janeiro.

Lee won a silver in the men's 10m air pistol SH1 earlier this week to go alongside the three medals he has won at previous Paralympic Games.

In the bronze medal match, he beat Australia's Christopher Pitt 7-3.

"I am very happy, but I am tired," said the Korean.

"Five hits in the match was good, very good.

"It definitely helped me win the medal."
