Second seeds Ronald Alexander and Melati Daeva Oktavianti successfully advanced to the second round of the mixed doubles competition at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Indonesian Masters.

The home duo faced fellow Indonesians Rian Swastedian and Syifa Fauziah at the Gedung Dome, with the pair combining to good effect to win the opening game 21-12.

Despite Swastedian and Fauziah producing a stronger challenge in the second game, Alexander and Oktavianti triumphed 21-19 to secure passage through to the next round of the Grand Prix Gold event.

Malaysia’s Kian Meng and Pei Jing Lai, the third seeds, also progressed as they defeated Indonesia’s Riky Widianto and Gloria Widjaja 21-17, 24-22.

Men’s doubles qualification also took place on the opening day of the tournament, with an all Indonesia clash proving the highlight.

Afiat Yuri Wirawan and Yohanes Re Sugiarto won the opening game of the match against Calvin Kristanto and Bagas Maulana, but their opponents levelled the tie to force a deciding game.

After a tense battle, Wirawan and Sugiarto were able to secure victory, with the pair prevailing by a 21-17, 18-21, 21-16 scoreline.

There was a host of successes for Indonesia in the men’s singles qualifying, with numerous matches taking place throughout the day.

Two of the home nation’s badminton players though suffered disappointment, following tight losses over three games.

The first was Rizky Doka Putra, who despite battling from a game down, was defeated 21-16, 19-21, 21-17 by India’s Talar Laa.

South Korea’s Kim Min Ki then triumphed 21-11, 17-21, 21-10 against Indonesia’s Rajid Patriawan.

The first round of the men’s singles event will officially begin tomorrow, with top seed Wei Nan of Hong Kong facing Indonesia’s Enzi Shafira.

Thailand’s Busanan Ongbumrungpan, the 2015 Southeast Asian Games singles champion, will hope to justify her status as top seed in the women’s event.

The 20-year-old will begin her campaign against Malaysia’s Yen Mei Ho.
