The top seeded singles players justified their status by cruising through to the semi-final stage of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) 2016 Brazil Grand Prix.

Alisson Vasconcell, one of two Brazilian players in the men’s singles quarter-finals, was unable to produce an upset as he was beaten 21-13, 21-7 by the top ranked Zulfadli Zulkiffli of Malaysia.

Zulkiffli is due to meet another home hope in the last four, as third seeded Ygor Coelh Oliveira emerged as a 21-12, 21-18 winner against the Czech Republic’s Milan Ludik.

Second ranked Misha Zilberman triumphed 21-19, 22-20 in his match with Belgium’s Maxime Moreeels.

The Israeli will now face Anand Pawar in the semi-finals, following the Indian’s 21-8, 21-10 demolition of Canada’s B. R. Sankeerth.

Brazilian fans were left disappointed in the women’s singles competition, with four of their players suffering defeats.

Paloma Edu Silva suffered the heaviest loss as she was comfortably beaten 21-5, 21-4 by Spanish top seed Beatriz Corrales.

The Spaniard will now face Canada’s Rachel Honderich after her 21-6, 21-4 win over Brazil’s Naira Beat Vier.

Second seed Airi Mikkela ended another Brazilian challenge by overcoming Mariana Pe Freitas 21-11, 21-8, with the Finnish play now due to play another home hope , Fabiana Silva, winner of an all-Brazilian contest with Manoela Koepsel 21-10, 21-11.

Germany’s Barbara Bellenberg and Eva Janssens won the only women’s doubles match to go ahead, as they defeated Pe Freitas and Thalita Correa 21-5, 21-8.

They will now face Brazil’s Fabiana Silva and Paula Pereira, after they enjoyed a walkover in the quarter-finals.

There were also walkovers for Bianca De Oliveir and Naira Beat Vier of Brazil, as well as their compatriots Manoela Kopesel.

The unseeded Canadian pair Toby Ng and B.R. Sankeerth continued their strong run in the men’s doubles by winning 21-19, 21-11 against Alisson Vasconcell and Rodolfo Au Salles, while their next opponents Michael Fuchs and Fabian Holzer of Germany won 21-14, 21-9 against another home pairing, Felippe Fonse and Luiz dos Santos.

German third seeds Jones Jansen and Josche Zurwonne triumphed 21-5, 21-10 over Brazil’s Lucas Gilinski and Matheus Santos to set up a match with Belgium’s Matijas Dierickx and Freek Golinski, who beat Paraguay’s Kentaro Asoh and Brazil’s Hugo Athuso 21-13, 21-12.
