Koumba Larroque struck gold for France on the first day of women’s freestyle events at the United World Wrestling (UWW) Junior World Championships in Mâcon.

The home favourite secured three victories to book her place in the 67 kilogram final, with her 5-0 semi-final win over Azerbaijan’s Elis Manolova proving a repeat of her success in the European Championship gold medal bout earlier this year.

China’s Yue Han produced a strong resistance in the final, but Larroque was not to be denied victory as the Frenchwoman sealed a 3-2 win to top the podium.

Despite her semi-final loss, Manolova secured a spot on the podium by beating India’s Reshma Anil Mane 4-2 in their bronze medal clash, while the United States’ Alexis Porter medalled courtesy of a technical fall win over Canada’s Brandy Perry.

Japan, who enjoyed huge success in women’s freestyle wrestling at Rio 2016 by winning four golds, showed their young talents could continue those achievements at Tokyo 2020 as they earned two of the four titles on offer today.

Miyu Nakamura struck gold in the 44kg event by beating Azerbaijan’s Svetlana Ankicheva by a technical fall verdict.

Bronze medals were claimed by Ukraine’s Oksana Livach and Russia’s Veronika Gurskaya, as they achieved technical fall triumphs over Bulgaria’s Fatme Mandeva and India’s Divya Tomar respectively.

Nakamura’s team-mate Yuzuru Kumano would emerge as the victor in the 59kg competition, defeating Ukraine’s Anhelina Lysak with a fall.

A fall would also prove the means for China’s Xingru Pei to beat Kazakhstan’s Madina Bakbergnova in their bronze medal bout, while the United States’ Kayla Miracle secured a 2-0 win over Uzbekistan’s Nabira Esenbaeva to seal a podium finish.

The final gold medal of the day was claimed by Russia’s Kseniia Nezgovorova, following her 6-2 win over China’s Xuejiao Liao in the 51kg division’s gold medal contest.

Khrystyna Bereza secured a fall win over Chinese Taipei’s Jo-Chi Chiu to earn the first bronze medal, with the Ukrainian being joined by Germany’s Elena Brugger on the podium after her 6-4 win over Canada’s Kristina McLaren.

Action in the French city is due to continue tomorrow with the 48kg, 55kg, 63kg and 72kg women's freestyle competitions.
