Georgia topped the Greco-Roman team rankings at the United World Wrestling (UWW) Junior World Championships in Mâcon after winning a hat-trick of gold medals on day two of competition.

Victories for Dato Chkhartishvili, Ramaz Zoidze and Zviadi Pataridze in the respective 55 kilograms, 66kg and 120kg categories added to Giorgi Melia’s success in the 96kg division yesterday to give the Georgians four titles in all.

Chkhartishvili edged Japan’s Yo Namba 3-2 in the 55kg final with the bronze medals going to Iran’s Meysam Karamali Dalkhani and Kyrgyzstan’s Nuzupbek Topchubaev at the expense of Ukraine’s Zhora Abovian and Italy’s Jacopo Sandron.

Zoidze defeated Kazakhstan’s Kaharman Kissymetov 5-1 for 66kg gold, while Pataridze registered a win by technical fall over Turkey’s Osman Kenan Yildirim to take top honours at 120kg.

Egypt’s Mohamed Ibrahim Elsayed Ibrahi Elsayed got the better of Iran’s Mohammad Hossein Morad Elyasi in a battle for 66kg bronze and was joined on the third step of the podium by Azerbaijan’s Islambek Dadov, who triumphed over Armenia’s Malkhas Amoyan.

Armenia’s Edgar Khachatryan was one of the two bronze medallists at 120kg along with Hungary’s Ferenc Almasi as Russia’s Nikolai Izmailov and Iran’s Amin Mohammadzaman Mirzazadeh just missed out on the prizes.

In the only final not involving a Georgian today, Azerbaijan’s Islam Abbasov narrowly overcame Turkey’s Ali Cengiz 3-2 to secure the 84kg crown.

Algeria’s Bachir Sid Azara ensured a bronze medal by overcoming Bulgaria’s Kiril Milenov Milov, while Iran’s Arman Yavar Alizadeh Abdevali did likewise with a win over Russia’s Vlas Dubrovin.

Russia finished second in the Greco-Roman team rankings, followed by Iran in third.

Action in the French city is due to continue tomorrow with the 44kg, 51kg, 59kg and 67kg women's freestyle competitions.
