Olympic champion Severin Freund has begun ski jumping again after five months out due to hip surgery.

The German, a member of his country's gold medal winning men's large hill team at the Sochi 2014 Games, was operated on in Munich in April.

The double world champion fell during the Four Hills tournament in Innsbruck in January which caused his hip problems.

He still managed to complete the 2015-16 World Cup campaign, where he finished second behind Slovenia's runaway leader Peter Prevc, and is now looking ahead to the start of the 2016-17 season.

"It's done, the first jumps of the season," said Freund on his Facebook page.

"They were far from how it should feel again sometimes but hey, after five months...

"First of all I'm very, very happy that everything went that well and that I don't have any problems anymore."

Despite his injury, 28-year-old Freund was named among Germany's four-strong A-squad for the 2016-17 campaign in May.

The World Cup champion from 2014-15 and former ski flying world champion will be joined by Richard Freitag, Stephan Leyhe and Andreas Wellinger, under the tutelage of coach Werner Schuster.

Norway's double Olympic bronze medallist Roar Ljøkelsøy will be a new addition to the German ski jumping coaching team in the new season.

The 39-year-old will work alongside Schuster.

Last season, the Germans finished third in the Nations Cup behind Slovenia and champions Norway.
