Newly crowned Olympic champions Argentina and Great Britain have climbed in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) men's and women's world standings after striking gold in Rio.

The Argentinians, who won the men's gold medal after beating Belgium 4-2 in the final, have risen five places to second in the FIH Hero World Rankings.

Australia, despite finishing sixth in Rio, clung on to top spot, with fourth-place finishers The Netherlands dropping to third.

Germany, the bronze medallists in Rio, have moved down a place to fourth while Belgium's silver saw them climb to fifth.

India moved down to sixth with Britain, who are in the rankings as England, falling to seventh.

Like the Argentinian men's team, Britain's women were seventh in their rankings ahead of their Olympic success.

They won every game in Rio, culminating in a 2-0 penalty shoot-out victory over back-to-back defending champions The Netherlands, following a 3-3 draw.

That has propelled them to second in the rankings - as England - with the Dutch still topping the pile.

Argentina have dropped to third place after only coming seventh in Rio.

Australia, New Zealand and the United States all move down one place to fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, with Olympic bronze medallists Germany climbing two places from ninth to seventh.

Both Olympic hockey gold medals went to first time winners.
