A new set of classroom activity plans designed to generate enthusiasm for next month's Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro have been launched by the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC).

The CPC hope their Schools Programme Rio-themed Activity Plans will help build awareness and understanding of the Canadian team which is set to compete at the event, due to take place from September 7 until 18.

The lesson plans have been split into three tiers, targeted at students in grades 1 to 3, grades 4 to 6 and 7 to 8, which will be available as free downloads to teachers in country.

The CPC are aiming to capitalise on the excitement following the conclusion yesterday of the Olympic Games yesterday, where Canada won four golds, three silvers and 15 bronze.

It comes amid continued concerns about the Paralympics in the Brazilian city after the International Paralympic Committee announced a series of drastic cuts would be made to the Games due to financial fears.

"We know many teachers are already planning their lessons, and what’s especially exciting this year is that the Paralympic Games will be held during the back-to-school month of September,” said Catherine Gosselin-Després, executive director of sport for the CPC.

"Each lesson set contains two activities and a class challenge and is filled with photos, links to videos and ways to vary the activities based on learning needs.

"I encourage all educators to access these innovative materials to help build awareness and excitement about Paralympic sport and the Paralympic Movement.”

The announcement from the CPC marks the latest attempt to raise awareness of Paralympic sport with Rio 2016 looming on the horizon.

An awareness campaign entitled the "ParaTough Training Series" was launched last month.

The initiative, established in conjunction with advertising agency BBDO Canada, includes the first workout series led entirely by Canadian Paralympians.

It features 14 Rio 2016-bound Paralympians from the country showcasing five challenging workouts and the campaign has called on fans of the team to try and follow along.

Canada's team for the Paralympics is expected to feature around 160 athletes in 19 sports.
