Accessible Media Inc has broadcast a special documentary as part of a search for the next batch of Canadian Paralympians ©AMI

A special one-hour documentary has been broadcast in Canada on Accessible Media Inc TV entitled "Are you #PARATOUGH" in an attempt to find the next generation of Paralympians who might compete for the nation at events beyond Rio 2016.

The programme, screened last night on the non-profit media platform, which caters for the blind, visually impaired and the deaf, was hosted by former athlete Mark DeMontis.

It involved him travelling to Halifax to take part in a Paralympians search event, hosted by the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), where he met athletes who are different stages of their respective careers.

Athletes who are due to represent Canada at next month's Paralympic Games, scheduled to take place from September 7 to 18, also feature, including nine-time gold medallist Benoit Huot and Aurelie Rivard, widely tipped for success at Rio 2016 having earned two world titles last year.

Others who took part in the programme include those who have been identified as having a potential long-term career in Paralympic sport.

"We are delighted with our ongoing partnership with AMI in bringing the Paralympic story to Canadians," Martin Richard, executive director of marketing and communications for the CPC, said.

"The Are You #PARATOUGH? documentary brings a unique view of the journey towards the Paralympics and will surely spark the dream of sport in future Para-athletes."

The documentary follows the launch of an awareness campaign entitled the “ParaTough Training Series” last month, aimed at raising awareness of Canadian Para-athletes ahead of Rio 2016.

"The Paralympic Games are an exciting event that not only unites people of all abilities but shows the world what these athletes are made of," says John Melville, vice-president of programming and production for AMI-tv.

"AMI is proud to utilise our platforms to help the CPC discover the next generation of Canadian Paralympians."

Ira Levy, partner and executive producer for Breakthrough Entertainment, added: "Breakthrough has had the pleasure of working with AMI in the past but what we loved about this particular assignment was the opportunity to present this compelling story from the point of view of Canada's elite Para-athletes in a completely accessible format."
