What will IPC decision to ban Russia mean for long-term future of the Paralympic Games

While I have been here at the judo across the city, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) have taken the momentous decision to ban Russia. I must admit, I never ever thought they would have the guts to do it and Sir Philip Craven deserves enormous credit for taking it.

But I cannot help but fear for what the consequences will be for the Paralympic Movement. International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach will surely be furious that he has been made to look weak, however much they try to explain it away by claiming that the IPC has a different structure to them, which they do.

But to the man on the street it looks simple: Olympics weak on drugs and Russia, Paralympics tough. Bach has already demonstrated on several occasions that he is a man who harbours grudges and will make sure those that cross him pay.

The relationship between the IOC and IPC is already quite fractious, particularly when it comes to the distribution of revenue from host cities. It was this point that at London 2012 led to the row between Sebastian Coe and British Olympic Association chairman Colin Moynihan.

I am sure that the IOC will now be even tougher in future negotiations and that could impact significantly on the future of the Paralympic Games. If relations between the two bodies break down and the IOC refuse to offer the same level of financial support you have to wonder if the Paralympics could survive on its own.
