Afghanistan’s three athletes for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games have been welcomed into the Athletes’ Village ahead of the Opening Ceremony.

The country will be represented by two men and one woman at the Games, with their challenge coming in athletics and judo.

Mohammad Tawfiq Bakhshi will be their sole challenger in judo, with the 30-year-old due to compete in the men’s under 100 kilogram competition.

They will also be represented by Abdul Wahab Zahiri in the men’s 100 metres, as well as Kamia Yousufi in the corresponding women’s event.

“They will try to do their best, but the situation for the athletes is different from the others they will challenge,” said Ghulam Rabani Rabani, Afghanistan’s Chef de Mission.

“They will try hard with the facilities we have in Afghanistan, but to make a challenge we need more facilities and more materials.”

The Afghan delegation were welcomed by performers creating an Amazonian jungle environment in the Athletes’ Village.

Their medal challenge at previous Games has depended on taekwondo player Rohullah Nikpai, who starred for country at the past two Summer Olympics.

Nikpai won bronze in the men’s 58 kilogram event at Beijing 2008, before repeating the feat in the 68kg competition at London 2012.

The 29-year-old has been unable to qualify for Rio 2016 after internal disputes prevented him from competing at key events to improve his world ranking.

However, Nikpai has joined the Afghan delegation at the Games as a guest, with the hope that the two-time medallist can help to inspire the team.

Nikpai’s two bronze medals are currently the only medals the country have claimed in their history at the Olympic Games.
