A nationwide competition has been launched to find a theme song for next year's Summer Universiade in Taipei City. 

The musician chosen to write the song will win NT$300,000 (£7,000/$9,000/€8,000) in prize money, the Taipei City Government announced. 

The competition is to be divided into three stages, with winners of the first stage to be selected online at the end of next month.

In October, the second stage of the competition is to take the form of live performances at three universities in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, before the finalists are selected for an event in November where the winner will be chosen.

The judges will include Chen Chien-chi, winner of a Golden Melody Award, Taiwan's most prestigious annual music prize. 

Musical arrangement will contribute 40 percent to the judging criteria, as is melody and lyrics, while marks for live performance would contribute 20 percent, Chen said.

Due to take place from August 19 to 30, Taipei 2017 will feature 17 sports, including swimming, diving, basketball, fencing, football, judo, table tennis, tennis and volleyball, and will be held in venues across Taipei, Keelung, New Taipei, Taoyuan and Hsinchu.
