A Kuwaiti Government appeal against the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to suspend the country, including from Rio 2016, has been rejected today by the civil Court of Canton de Vaud in Switzerland.

In the ruling, a summary of which has been seen by insidethegames, the Kuwaiti State and Public Authority for sports were ordered to pay the IOC a total of CHF11,125 (£8,600/$11,500/€10,200) in legal costs.

This follows a hearing on July 15.

They now have 30 days to appeal the decision to the Swiss Federal Court.

The Gulf nation remains barred from Rio 2016 after the Kuwait Olympic Committee was suspended by the IOC last year for Government interference.

It followed the passing of a controversial Sports Law which supposedly - introduced by Kuwaiti Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Al-Salem Al-Homud Al-Sabah, who stepped down as ASC President in November - which officially came into effect earlier this year.

Kuwaiti athletes will only compete here independently under the IOC flag.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last month rejected a separate appeal launched by the Asian Shooting Confederation, the Kuwait Shooting Federation and three Kuwaiti competitors defending their right to compete.

But today's ruling is particularly significant because it comes from outside sport and thus dismisses the Kuwaiti that only the sports world is conspiring against them.

It comes just a day after Kuwait's Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) President Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah has been officially cleared of all charges by Kuwait’s Supreme Court after he was accused of insulting the judiciary.

Sheikh Ahmad's personal dispute with Sheikh Salman is thought to be at the centre of the Kuwaiti dispute.
