Latvia’s Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins lived up to their status as top seeds in the men’s competition at the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Major Series event in Klagenfurt by triumphing in the final.

The duo were aiming to win the Austrian tournament for the first time in their career, with Smedins hoping to celebrate his 29th birthday in style.

A strong performance in the opening set of their contest against Brazilian youngsters Saymon Barbosa and Gustavo Carvalhaes saw them prevail 21-18.

The pair, who are due to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, maintained control of the tie and emerged as 21-18, 21-18 winners.

“It’s very special because the crowd is the best in the world, starting the cheering in the first pool match and the stadium is almost full,” said Smedins.

“Our goal is to keep playing and play on centre court, where the atmosphere is something unusual other than in other tournaments.

“The Brazilians are young and they’re very good but they made a few errors, just gave some points to us and we were able to just push it more.

“The biggest difference for us was the blocks, because we didn’t serve so well.”
