France’s Gael Monfils continued his excellent form by beating home favourite Milos Raonic in straight sets to reach the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup at the Aviva Centre at York University in Toronto.

The 29-year-old, winner of the the Citi Open in Washington D.C. on Sunday (July 24), beat his fourth-seeded Canadian opponent 6-4, 6-4 to set up a last-four encounter with world number one Novak Djokovic. 

"I played good, I'm strong, full of confidence," said Monfils, the 10th seed.

"I feel confident with my game.

"When I'm in shape, I'm tough to beat."

Top seed Djokovic made 33 unforced errors in his meeting with Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych but still progressed with a 7-6, 6-4 win.

Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka and Japan’s Kei Nishikori will meet in tomorrow’s other semi-final after both coming through their last-eight ties.

Second seed Wawrinka overcame South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 6-1, 6-3, while third seed Nishikori defeated Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

In the quarter-finals of the women’s event in Montreal, Slovakian qualifier Kristina Kucova inflicted a shock 6-4, 6-3 defeat on 15th seed Johanna Konta. 

It denied Konta, ranked 147th in June of last year, the chance of becoming the first British woman since Jo Durie in September 1984 to make the WTA top 10.

Next up for Kucova is a meeting with the United States’ Madison Keys, who beat Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6, 1-6, 6-0.

Romania’s Simona Halep and Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber of Germany will meet in the other semi-final.

Fifth seed Halep came from behind to overcome Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, while second seed Kerber cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over another Russian, Daria Kasatkina.
