Slovenian ice hockey legend Tomaz Razingar has officially retired from the sport.

The 37-year-old represented his country in 14 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) events and was his nation's flagbearer at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

There, Slovenia reached the quarter-finals of the competition following victories over Slovakia and Austria, before exiting the competition after a 5-0 defeat to eventual silver medallists Sweden.

Despite the loss, reaching the last eight was still considered as a historic achievement for the country.

Razinger officially brought his career to an end with a charity match in his home town of Bled.

"I am happy for all my teammates who succeeded at this beautiful game," he said, as reported by the IIHF.

"If it was not for them and for all the coaches and my parents, who had put me on skates and supported me, and of course my family, who believed in me when many people didn’t, I wouldn’t be standing here today.

"Hockey is a team sport in which we need to help each other."

Razingar, who plays on the left wing, often represented his country as captain.

The charity match featured many other star names from Slovenian ice hockey.

"Tomaz is an icon of Slovenian hockey," said compatriot Marcel Rodman, who was once drafted by NHL outfit Boston Bruins.

"He proved this not only with his knowledge as a hockey player, but also as a person.

“There are not many people who would be able to gather so many players from different generations at a successful charity event.

"I am certain that we all enjoyed it, both players and spectators, and we jointly paid tribute to Tomaz."
