Former Universiade champion Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk was a casualty in the second round of the men's competition at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Vietnam Open.

The Thai player, the Universiade champion at Kazan 2013, received a walkover in the first round but was knocked out today by Shesar Hiren Rhustavito.

It was a three-game affair with Indonesia's Rhustavito triumphing 21-14, 14-21, 21-17.

Malaysia's former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli is also through to the quarter-finals after a 21-10, 21-13 win over India's Pratul Joshi.

Hong Kong's fourth seed Wong Wing Ki is the top-ranked player left in after the withdrawals of the top two seeds and third seed Wei Nan's defeat in round one.

He came through against Japan's Hashiru Shimono in three games, 16-21, 21-19, 21-15.

In the women's competition, Vietnam's Nguyen Thuy Linh impressed in her home tournament as she beat Yu Chien-hui of Chinese Taipei to advance into round two, 21-13, 21-17.

Top seeded Taiwanese Hsu Ya-ching is also through thanks to a 21-18, 21-16 success over Thailand's Kunjira Khongdee.

Hong Kong's third seed Cheung Ngan Yi was a 21-16, 21-13 winner over Indonesia's Ruselli Hartawan, who has two silver medals from the World Junior Championships in her collection.

Competition continues tomorrow at the Nguyen Du Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City.

The Vietnam Open is a Grand Prix Gold level event.
