Former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli progressed in the men's draw as the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Vietnam Open begun in Ho Chi Minh City today.

The Grand Prix Gold level tournament is lacking any superstar names which gives hope to the likes of Malaysian Zulkiffli, who won the boys' title at the World Junior Championships in Taipei in 2011.

The 23-year-old, who was also a member of the gold medal winning mixed team line-up in Taipei, had to come from behind to progress at the Nguyen Du Stadium in his round one clash today.

He eventually saw off Indonesia's Henrikho Kho Wibowo 19-21, 21-13, 21-11 to move on in the competition.

Third see Wei Nan of Hong Kong was the biggest casualty of the day as he went out in three games to Japan's Koki Watanabe, who triumphed 21-16, 14-21, 21-19.

Russian tenth seed Vladimir Malkov ousted India's Rahul Yadav Chittaboina 22-20, 21-17.
