Russia’s Dmitry Polyanskiy gave his bid for gold at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games a boost by edging brother Igor to victory in the men’s elite race at the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Cup in Tiszaujvaros in Hungary.

The 2012 World Championships bronze medallist clocked 54 minutes dead to narrowly seal gold ahead of Igor Polyanskiy, who had to settle for silver with a time of 54:06.

Tamás Tóth delivered success for the host nation as he did enough to take home bronze.

The result handed Dmitry his second win at the ITU World Cup in Tiszaujvaros after he triumphed at the 2009 edition of the event.

Following the closely-fought swimming and cycling sections of the race, it was all decided on the five kilometres run and the Russian duo signalled their intentions early on by surging to the front in the opening stages.

Dmitry eventually pulled clear and finished six seconds clear of his brother as Tóth delighted the home crowd by holding off the challenge of Spain’s Francesc Godoy.

“I am very happy with my race here, and is great to have such a performance just before the World Triathlon Series Hamburg next week and the Olympics in Rio,” Dmitry said.

“I worked very hard because I knew my brother was just behind.

“We worked both all together in the swim and the bike, but then in the run it was up to each one of us.”

In the women’s race, Renee Tomlin of the United States secured the gold medal in a time of 1:00.02 to pip the Ukraine’s Yuliya Yelistratova.

Elena Danilova of Russia was the recipient of the bronze medal as she was able to cross the line seven seconds in front of Tomlin’s compatriot Erin Dolan.

“It was a great race,” Tomlin, who produced a dominant performance on her way to victory, said.

“The atmosphere was amazing, and I felt really good since the beginning.”
