Mijain Lopez Nunez moved back up to second place in the 130 kilogram Greco-Roman United World Wrestling (UWW) rankings after the Cuban earned a victory at the Granma Cup in Havana earlier this month.

The seven-time world champion is building towards Rio 2016, where he will hope to claim his third Olympic crown, having won gold at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games in the 120kg division.

His key triumph came over Pan American Games gold medallist Yasmany Lugo Cabrera, his fellow Cuban, en-route to triumphing in the event.

It saw him move back ahead of Ukraine’s Aleksander Chernetski in the rankings, with Turkey’s Riza Kayaalp the only man now above him heading into the Olympics.

Germany’s Frank Staebler was one of only three world champions in action during the month, opting to compete in the non-Olympic 71kg event at the Pytlasinski Cup.

Four wins proved enough for the 27-year-old to claim the title and preserve his status as the number one lightweight.

South Korea’s Ryu Han-Soo, the 2013 world champion and runner-up to Staebler last year, remains second in the rankings.

Ismael Borrero Molinahas held onto his status as 59kg number one, with the Cuban still facing pressure from Azerbaijan’s Rovshan Bayramov.

Bayramov’s compatriot Rasul Chunayev, however, leads the 71kg rankings ahead of Hungary’s Balint Korpasi and Iran’s Afshin Byabangard.

Russian wrestlers Roman Vlasov and Nikita Melnikov lead the 75kg and 98kg divisions respectively heading into Rio 2016, while Turkey’s Selcuk Cebi remains the 80kg number one.

The 85kg division is currently headed by world and European champion Zhan Belenyuk of Ukraine.
