Bulgarian Taekwondo Federation President Slavi Binev has visited the European Taekwondo Union (ETU) headquarters to sign a contract to bring the Under-21 European Championships to the country in 2017.

Binev met with ETU President Sakis Pragalos and secretary general Michael Fysentzidis at their offices in Athens, with ETU Council member Andrey Georgiev also in attendance at the meeting.

The parties sealed the agreement, which will see a European Taekwondo Championships come to Bulgaria for the first time in its history.

Competition has been scheduled to take place in April, however the full dates of the Championships, including the city and venue, are still set to be decided.

The ETU have hailed the agreement as being of “great significance”, with the organisation claiming that it shows that more National Federations across Europe are willing to host major taekwondo events.

They also expressed their view that Bulgaria would receive many benefits by hosting the competition, stating that it will boost tourism in the host city, while helping to grow their relationships with fellow federations.

A further aspect claimed by the ETU was that Federations and organisers have become more professional in the staging of large scale taekwondo competitions.

It is hoped the Championships will also give athletes substantial experience of major events which can help their transition to senior events.

The last Under-21 European Championships was held in Romania in November 2015.
