Romanian-born Canadian former super middleweight champion Lucian Bute is having his B-sample opened today following his positive drugs test for Ostarine.

The 36-year-old failed a drugs test following his draw with Sweden’s Badou Jack, the current World Boxing Council (WBC) champion in the division, in Washington D.C. on April 30.

Bute’s positive test was revealed by the WBC after they were notified by the D.C. Boxing and Wrestling Commission.

The WBC and the D.C. Commission have communicated frequently about that case," explained a statement.

"The D.C. Commission arranged for the opening of Mr. Bute’s “B” sample which will take place on Thursday, July 7, 2016.

"Mr. Bute has designated his representatives who will attend the opening of the “B” sample container, consistent with the WBC Rules & Regulations.

"More information about this case will be made available in days to come.”

The 1999 World Championships welterweight bronze medallist, who was International Boxing Federation champion for five years from 2007 to 2012, has continually protested his innocence.

He claims to have no idea how the positive test could have arisen.

“I am surprised and sad about that news,” Bute told ESPN.com following his failure.

“I can’t understand how the test could have been positive.

"I have been tested exhaustively since I was world champion and never tested positive.

"I have never taken anything prohibited.

"I trust every member of my team and I am convinced when the B sample will be tested it will prove me right and will turn out negative.”

He faces a ban of at least two years if the positive result is confirmed.

Ostarine, which has been on the World Anti-Doping Agency banned list since 2008, is used as a muscle waster, helping to increase the muscle mass, improve stamina and boost recovery ability, though it is not an anabolic steroid.
