Former International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) general secretary Essar Gabriel is playing a leading role in the organisation of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Championships 3x3 taking place next year in Nantes.

Gabriel, who stood down from his IAAF post after four years last year, has since launched a Dubai-based consultancy agency, egabriel.

He played a role in the French city's succesful bid for the event alongside the French Federation of Basketball and the city of Nantes, Francs Jeux report, and will continue to do so as preparations unfold.

The Championships will mark the fourth edition of the showpiece 3x3 event, which is seeking to be added to the Olympic programme.

Action is due to take place from June 17 to 21 on the Parc des Chantiers, on the Isle of Nantes.

Twenty men’s and 20 women’s teams are due to compete, with men’s dunk, women’s skills contest and mixed shoot-out contests also scheduled.

Gabriel spent four years at the IAAF working under the body's former President Lamine Diack, who is not at the centre of a French police investigation into corruption.

Gabriel has not been accused of personal wrongdoing.

The administrator has previously been involved in basketball, and was involved in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore at which basketball 3x3 made its international bow.

Qatar’s men and United States' women are the reigning FIBA 3x3 world champions after winning at the 2014 edition in Moscow.

The next event is due to take place in Guangzhou, China from October 11 to 15.
