Fifth seeds Michal Bryl and Kacper Kujawiak of Poland safely progressed to the next round of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Tour Poreč Major as organisers opted to stage qualification matches over two days.

The late change was confirmed ahead of the day’s play and those who were successful will have to get through another match tomorrow in order to reach the main draw.

The Polish pair, seeded fifth for the qualification round, eased to a 21-12, 21-15 victory in their encounter with 28th-seeded Jure Bedra and Jernej Potocnik of Slovenia.

Their next opponents will be Hendrik Mol and Lars Fredrik Tvinde of Norway, who overcame Chris Gregory and Jake Sheaf of England in straight sets 21-14, 21-16.

American pair Sean Rosenthal and Jeremy Casebeer were involved in a hard-fought contest with Germany’s Lorenz Schümann and Julius Thole, eventually prevailing 26-24, 16-21, 18-16.

Top qualification seeds Saymon Barbosa and Gustavo Carvalhaes of Brazil received a bye into tomorrow’s matches along with compatriots Ricardo Santos and Andre Loyola.

“I like it [the switch in qualification scheduling],” said Santos, who lost a country quota match

“We got a lucky break when some teams withdrew to get another chance to qualify for the main draw.

“And, we got another lucky break with a first-round bye in qualification.

“Now, we have chance to rest and prepare for tomorrow’s match.”

In the women’s event, German duo Chantal Laboureur and Julia Sude, the top seeds in the qualifying round, enjoyed serene progress to the main draw by beating Karolina Rehácková and Magdalena Dostalova of the Czech Republic 21-14, 21-13 in just 28 minutes.

They will be joined in the next stage of the competition, part of the FIVB World Tour, by Brazilian pair Fernanda and Josemari Alves.

The duo dispatched the Czech Republic’s Sara Olivova and Eliška Gálová 21-12, 21-13.
