Singapore endured a frustrating day in the women’s singles as the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Korean Open began in Incheon.

First the world number 62 Lin Ye was beaten by Taiwan’s unranked Liu Yu-hsin of Taiwan, missing out in a seven-game thriller, 8-11, 8-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-4, 7-11, 11-9

Thirty-sixth ranked Zeng Jian, winner of the under 21 singles in Japan last week, was then beaten in four straight sets by another Chinese player in Wen Jia.

Wen is a player of vast international pedigree, who has won World Tour singles title in China in 2011 and in Germany in 2013.

Wen was on cruise control as she won 11-6, 11-5, 11-6, 11-8.

There was more Taiwanese success elsewhere in the women’s draw courtesy of another unranked player in Li Yun-Jhu.

She accounted for Thailand’s Nanthana Komwong, ranked 72nd in the world, in another seven game thriller, 11-5, 14-12, 6-11, 7-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-5.

It was a day of Brazilian success ahead of Rio 2016 in the men's singles qualifying as five players from the host nation emerged victorious.

Brazilian number one Hugo Calderano beat the host nation’s Choi In-hyeok 11-7, 11-6, 11-6, 11-6, as expected, but major shocks were produced by team-mates Eric Jouti and Vitor Ishiy.

World number 238 Vitor Ishiy beat Japan’s Kohei Sambe, ranked 88th, in a tension packed seven games duel decided by the minimal margin in the decider: 12-10, 11-13, 11-7, 9-11, 12-10, 10-12, 13-11.

Eric Jouti, world number 200, produced an even bigger shock by outsting another South Korean in Kim Min-seok in six games, 11-8, 4-11, 12-10, 15-13, 6-11, 11-7.

Kim is currently unranked due to absence from competition but has been as high as 15.
