Current champions Czech Republic will begin the 2017 Fed Cup with a home tie against Spain following the World Group draw at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Conference and Annual General Meeting in Zagreb.

The Czechs, led by two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitová, are set to meet France in the final of the current edition in Strasbourg on November 12 and 13 as they look to win a fifth title in the last six years.

Spain will provide their first hurdle next year having been promoted from World Group II after beating Italy in the 2016 playoffs.

France play away to this year’s semi-finalists Switzerland and the United States host Germany.

Completing the list of first-round ties, which are due to be played on February 11 and 12, is The Netherlands' trip to Belarus.

As the 2016 finalists, the Czechs and France were automatically the top two seeds in the 2017 World Group, while the remaining seeds were based on the latest ITF Fed Cup Nations Ranking of April 18, 2016.

The first round of World Group II fixtures, scheduled for the same dates as the World Group ties, sees Russia host Chinese Taipei, Belgium travel to Romania, Ukraine welcome Australia, and Slovakia face a trip to Italy.

The Fed Cup is the largest annual international team competition in women’s sport, with 102 nations entering in 2016.

The competition is 53-years-old, having been founded in 1963.
