Members of Inas - the International Federation for sport for Para-athletes with an intellectual disability - are preparing to celebrate Global ID Sports Week, which will run from June 25 to July 1.

The week is aimed at raising awareness of sport for intellectually disabled athletes and celebrating their success across the world.

Colombia have already begun holding events as part of the celebration, with 100 athletes having begun competing in a National Games.

The competitors have been taking part in athletics, football, basketball and swimming competitions, with the event having been supported by around 40 volunteers in Chocó and broadcast on television and radio across the state.

A National Athletics Championship is due to attract around 100 athletes in Barnsley when the United Kingdom get their activities underway, while Australia will reveal the next 20 recipients of the NEXT GEN Athlete awards at Brisbane City Hall.

The awards are part of a project to support promising athletes in the country, which was launched after the news that Brisbane would host the 2019 Inas Global Games.

The Games are the largest sports event for elite intellectually disabled athletes, with around 1,000 athletes expected to attend the event, which is being held in Oceania for the first time.

A Para-volley challenge meeting will bring Portugal’s celebrations to a close on July 1 in Setubal.

The week will draw to a close with the 2016 INAS Open Athletics Championships in Ankara, with Turkey due to host the event which will see teams from France, Croatia, The Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Ukraine and Poland among the competitors.
