Sweden's Harald Anderssen produced two shock victories today to qualify for the main draw of the International Table Tennis Federation Japan Open in Tokyo.

Anderssen, ranked just 183rd in the world, first beat Russia’s world number 21 Alexander Shibaev 12-10, 11-4, 8-11, 11-3, 11-8.

He then accounted for colleague Anton Källberg, ranked 84th, 11-3, 8-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-2, 11-7.

It came on a mixed day for Sweden in which the country's top ranked player Pär Gerell was beaten unherelded home hope Masato Shiono.

Another Japanese player to beat a higher fancied European was Yuto Muramatsu, who overcame France's Emmanuel Lebesson, 11-7, 11-9, 10-12, 11-4, 11-8.

Lebesson's team-mate Benjamin Brossier enjoyed better fortunes, however, beating Hong Kong’s Ho Kwan Kit,12-10, 11-9, 1-12, 11-6, 9-11, 11-5.

Singapore were the most successful nation in the final rounds of women's qualifying.

Zhou Yihan, ranked 47 in the women's singles, accounted for South Korea’s Yang Haeun, ranked 20th, 12-10, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-9.

Thirty-sixth ranked Zeng Jian then overcame Hong Kong’s 23rd rated Lee Ho Ching, 11-7, 4-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7.

But perhaps the biggest star was 12-year-old sensation Tomokazu Harimoto, who qualified for an all-Japanese under 21 men's singles final with Kohei Sambe.
