The International Triathlon Union (ITU) Grand Final will be held in Olympic capital Lausanne in 2019, it has been announced.

The Swiss city saw off competition from Canadian rival Edmonton to land the Grand Final, the flagship event on the ITU's calendar.

In the build-up to the event, Lausanne will also host a leg of the ITU World Cup in 2018.

The ITU is one of many sporting bodies to be based in Lausanne, alongside the International Olympic Committee.

Marc Vuilleumier, Municipal Councillor of the City of Lausanne in charge of sports, said: “We have hosted a triathlon every year in the Olympic Capital since 1994.

"We’ve had World Championships twice, the last time in 2006.

"In 2019, we want, together with the ITU, to showcase triathlon in a new way, with a new course, right in the heart of the Olympic Capital.

"For us, it is also a fantastic way to promote our sporting city to the world, against the spectacular backdrop of the lake and the Alps.

"We look forward to strengthen our ties with the ITU in the years to come."

The ITU Grand Final sees elite men's and women's world champions crowned with the event serving as the climax of the World Triathlon Series season.

More rankings points are available than regular World Triathlon Series races.

Patrick Schmid, President of Swiss Triathlon, said: “Lausanne has brought a lot to Swiss and international triathlon over the years.

"It is a great chance for us to continue building our sport, and for the ITU to continue to showcase triathlon to the international sports world.”

Lausanne won their bid with help from consultancy firm TSE Consulting, with Swiss triathlete Nicola Spirig, winner of the Olympic gold medal at London 2012, supporting the efforts via video.

The city will also host the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games, and will co-host the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships with Zurich in the same year.
