Americans Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena earned a straight sets victory in the men's final of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Major Series event in Hamburg.

The duo had already claimed three titles during this year’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour and closed on another after beating world champions Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil in the semi-finals.

They were able to claim the opening set 21-16 against the top seeds and maintained their momentum to earn the second 21-15, with the result moving the Americans into the final.

The Netherlands’ Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen would provide their challenge in the gold medal contest, following their 21-18, 21-16 victory over Russia’s Konstantin Semenov and Viacheslav Krasilnikov.

Both pairs fought out a high-quality opening set of the contest, with Dalhausser and Lucena eventually edging out their opponents 29-27 to take control of the final.

It proved the pivotal moment, with the Americans racing away from their rivals to win the second set 21-12 to seal the straight sets win.

The result continues the United States' 100 per cent record against Dutch teams in FIVB gold medal ties, with Americans having prevailed on all three occasions in history.

The bronze medal contest saw Alison and Bruno fall to defeat, despite winning the opening set of the match 21-15.

However Semenov and Krasilnikov hit back to win the remaining sets 22-20, 15-10 to secure their place on the podium.
