Tehran has been awarded the Greco-Roman and Freestyle World Cups in 2017 after United World Wrestling revealed the host of several of their major competitions for next year.

The Iranian capital has played host to the past four editions of the Greco-Roman World Cup, which is contested by national teams and last took place in May, with the hosts claiming the overall victory.

They have also prevailed at the last four editions of the Freestyle World Cup, with their success in the past two years having been earned in Los Angeles.

The American city is due to the host the 2016 event, due to get underway tomorrow, but next year’s competition is scheduled to head to Tehran, which last hosted the World Cup in 2013.

Finland will welcome the 2017 Junior World Championships to the country for the first time in the country’s history, with the city of Tampere set to host competition.

The cadet and veteran World Championships have been awarded to Athens and Plovdiv respectively.

Belgrade has been selected as the host nation for the 2017 European Championships, with the home city of UWW President Nenad Lalovic due to welcome back the continental event for the first time since 2012.

The decision to award the Championships to the Serbian capital follows the country’s successful staging of the European Olympic Qualifier during April in Zrenjanin.

Sarajevo has been awarded the hosting rights to the Cadet European Championships, while Dortmund has been selected to stage the Junior European Championships.

Hungary will host the Under-23 European Championships, with Budapest, a contender for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, having been selected as host.

The UWW Executive Board also opted to award New Delhi the 2017 Senior Asian Championships, with Thailand’s capital Bangkok due to host the cadet competition.

Marrakech were confirmed as the host city for the Cadet, Junior and Senior African Championships, marking the first time the Moroccan city has hosted all three age groups in one event.

The dates of each of the Championships are set to be confirmed in the coming weeks, with the governing body also set to name more locations for their future events.
