Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei became the first non-home player to claim six men's singles titles at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Indonesia Open with a hard-fought 65 minute victory over Danish rival Jan Ø. Jørgensen in Jakarta.

Lee, who was handed an eight-month ban for doping in 2014, was under pressure in the early stages against an opponent ranked fifth in the world.

Jørgensen produced near-perfect tactics to prevent the Malaysian from settling into his usual attacking game as he battled to a 21-17 first-set win at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno stadium.

The Dane was on the cusp of a shock victory at 19-17 up in the second, only for Lee to produce four superb points to claim the win.

After trailing once again early in the third, Lee's class gradually told as he moved clear to win the decider 21-17.

It followed Lee's earlier victories in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013, meaning he moves level with Indonesian greats Ardy Wiranata and Taufik Hidayat on six victories.

“I’m very happy to win the Indonesia Open for the sixth time,” he said.

“Today Jørgensen played very well - I was relaxed and in the beginning I didn’t play so well.

"In the second game he was leading 19-17, I was preparing myself to lose.

"I just wanted to try for each point - Jørgensen played much played better today compared to previous matches."

Taiwan's Tai Tzu Ying produced a similarly battling effort to beat China's Wang Yihan, triumphing in a tough opening set before easing clear in the second.

Wang, who beat Spanish world champion Carolina Marin in the semi-finals, was unable to cope with her tricky opponent, who mixed her pace and length of shot superbly to take the first set 21-17.

She then powered clear to win the second 21-8 to achieve the rare feat of beating all three top Chinese - Li Xuerui, Wang Shixian and Wang Yihan - in the course of a single tournament.

China managed just one title across the five finls, when Xu Chen and Ma Jin retained their mixed doubles crown with a  21-15 16-21 21-13 victory over South Korean opponents Ko Sung-hyun and Kim Ha-na.

Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong gained South Korean revenge, however, beating Chai Biao and Hong Wei of China, 13-21 21-13 21-16 in the men's doubles final.

Japan’s Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi also overcame Chinese opposition to win the women's doubles title.

The top-seeds beat their third-ranked opponents 21-15, 8-21, 21-15.
