Jiri Liptak fought off fierce competition to claim men’s trap gold at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in San Marino today.

The Czech Republic shooter had achieved 121 hits out of 125 targets during the qualification stage of the competition, before only missing two of the 15 during the semi-finals.

His efforts were matched by Italy’s Daniele Resca, Russia’s Alexey Alipov and Spain's Alberto Fernandez to see the four men advance to a shoot-off at the Tiro a Volo San Marino Shooting Range.

Resca was the first to book his place in the final, hitting four targets in the opening stage of the shoot-off, while Liptak and Alipov hit three.

Liptak beat the  Athens 2004 Olympic champion by hitting one target more than Alipov in the next series.

Having edged into the gold medal contest, Liptak secured a 12-10 victory over Resca to win his second World Cup gold medal, his last having also come at the expense of the Italian in Beijing during 2014.

“The qualifications went well, even if it hasn’t been easy to advance to the final: all the best shooters of the world were competing here in San Marino,” Liptak said.

“The semi-final was up and down.

“I missed the last target, and I ended up in a shoot-off to access the gold medal match.

“Luckily I made it through, and that gave me the confidence to shoot for the brightest medal.”

Alipov, the gold medallist at the 2015 European Games in Baku, completed the podium positions by defeating world number one Fernandez in the bronze medal contest.

The Spaniard, winner of the last two World Cup competitions, began by missing the first three targets and was unable to recover, Alipov winning 13-11.

Following tomorrow’s rest day, the World Cup is due to continue with a double trap event on Monday (June 6).
