Altenberg in Germany and Swiss town St Moritz are the two bidders in the running for the 2020 International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Championships, insidethegames understands.

The two candidates will go head-to-head for the right to stage the event in four years’ time when the IBSF Congress meets at the Hilton London Metropole on June 12.

A simple majority among the governing body’s members is required to win the race for the sport’s flagship annual competition.

All of the organisation’s members, as well as those on the Executive Committee, will be able to cast one vote, while those members who have hosted IBSF events this season will be granted two votes.

Altenburg, located close to Germany’s border with the Czech Republic, last staged the IBSF World Championships in 2008.

It has previously hosted bobsleigh competitions at the 1991 Championships, as well as skeleton three years later.

The town then played host to men’s skeleton events at the 1999 edition and men’s bobsleigh in 2000.

St Moritz, a two-time Winter Olympic Games host city, has been involved in no fewer than 22 World Championship events since it was first held in 1930.

It most recently staged the World Championships in 2013.

The Swiss town, a popular hub for winter events, is one of the areas of the country weighing up becoming part of the nation’s potential bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics and being given the rights to another top-level competition in the sport could provide a boost to their prospects.

St Moritz launched a failed attempt at the 2022 Games, joining forces with Davos, which was axed in 2013 after a referendum voted against the bid.

Germany hosted this year's World Championships in Winterberg, while 2014 Winter Olympics host city Sochi will be the venue for the 2017 edition.

At the Congress in London, awarded to the British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association last year, the 2017 IBSF Para World Championships, Junior World Championships and Summer Push Championships will also be awarded.

Members are due to receive a report on the state of preparations at the Alpensia Sliding Centre, the venue for bobsleigh and skeleton at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.

Testing at the venue hit problems back in March due to a lack of ice on the track as issues with the refrigeration system meant that only the lower part of the track could be used.

Organisers of the first-ever Winter Games to be held in South Korea played down fears during March’s visit of the International Olympic Committee Coordination Commission, claiming the matter would be swiftly resolved.
