American sailors Alphonsus Doerr, Bradley Kendell and Hugh Freund have regained the sonar class lead at the Para World Sailing Championships in Medemblik.

The trio had lost the lead to British rivals John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Steve Thomas yesterday but are back on top thanks to a victory and a second place on Dutch waters today.

They now have 19 points with the British crew, the defending world champions, lying second on 23 after following up a second place in race one by only finishing seventh.

Australians Colin Harrison, Jonathan Harris and Russell Boaden sit third on 24 points after winning race two, improving on a fifth-place finish in the opening race.

"Today's good performance began with our starting," said Kendell.

"We found our correct timing, and found our spot both times.

"We accelerated at the right time as well.

"On the first race, it was all about sailing our own race.

"We were hitting all the shifts and had a clear lane all the way through.

"I was just telling the guys that we were sailing smart, and to keep it going.”

The World Championships will conclude with two further races tomorrow.

In the SKUD18 class, Polish leaders Monika Gibes and Piotr Cichocki took a big step towards overall glory by winning both races.

It means they take a 12-point lead into the final day ahead of Australia's reigning world champions Daniel Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch, and Britain's Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell, with both crews sitting on 24.

Germany's Heiko Kroger remains in pole position in the 2.4m after he won race one and came second in race two.

France's defending champion Damien Seguin won race two but came 11th in the first, a result which has been discarded, meaning an earlier eighth place finish does count.

Kroger now leads on 20 points, with the Frenchman on 27.

Australia's Matt Bugg is in third place on 29.
