France’s Jean-Charles Valladont and Turkey’s Mete Gazoz justified their status as the top seeds in the men’s recurve event at the European Archery Championships by booking their places in the gold medal tie today in Nottingham.

Sixteen year-old Gazoz had finished second during qualifying to Valladont and continued to show his ability throughout the day, with a 6-0 victory over Norway’s Baard Nesteng seeing him advance to the semi-finals.

He was able to back-up the win by edging past France’s Lucas Daniel 6-4 to earn the chance to claim a first title at continental level.

“That was the longest match of the day,” said Gazoz.

“I enjoyed every set of it, especially the last one where I needed a 10 and I shot it.

“It was so exciting today, I didn’t have much in my mind and I was just focused on shooting good arrows.”

He will face the challenge of Valladont, who recorded a 7-3 win over Britain’s Patrick Huston in his semi-final tie.

In the women’s competition, top seed Tuiana Dashidorzhieva of Russia reached the gold medal contest after claiming a 6-2 victory over Germany’s Lisa Unruh.

Seventh seed Veronika Marchenko triumphed 6-0 in an all-Ukrainian clash with Anastasia Pavlova to book her place in the final.

Denmark’s Stephan Hansen, who won the men’s compound world title in front of a home crowd in Copenhagen last year, will look to earn the European title when he meets Dutch archer Peter Elzinga in the final.

It followed Hansen claiming a 147-144 win over France’s Dominique Genet in the semi-finals, while Elzinga overcame Croatia’s Ivan Markes 146-142 in his tie.

Belgium’s Sarah Prieels won a shoot-off against Russia’s Mariia Vinogradova to reach the women’s gold medal contest, while her compatriot Alexandra Savenkova defeated France’s Amelie Sancenot 144-141.

The day also saw the second round of the women’s recurve European Olympic qualification event conclude, while the men’s competition reached the end of the third round.

Tomorrow will see archers complete the competition, with three men’s and three women’s Rio 2016 quotas available.
