Russia enjoyed a successful day at the European Archery Championships as they booked their place in three of the four team gold medal matches in Nottingham.

On a busy day of action in the British city, the Russians were in superb form as they guaranteed a minimum of three silver medals from the men’s team recurve as well as the men’s and women’s compound competitions.

Their men’s recurve team, made up of Arsalan Baldanov, Alexander Kozhin and Vitalii Popov, who are seeded third for the tournament, began in style with a 6-2 demolition of Poland in round one.

They then went on to prove too strong for sixth-seeded Italy in the last eight, progressing to the semi-finals in formidable fashion by recording a 6-0 whitewash to set up a meeting with Spain.

A tense affair went the way of the Russian trio, who emerged with a 5-4 victory thanks to having the edge in the shoot-off and they will clash with hosts Britain for the European title.

Their women’s compound side, featuring Mariia Vinogradova, Albina Loginova and Alexandra Savenkova, were given a first round bye before they beat Italy 227-219 in the quarter-final.

Russia’s semi-final was also a straight-forward contest as they dispatched Britain 231-217 to book a spot in the final, where they will face Turkey, who overcame the Netherlands 222-220.

The men’s compound outfit were also in good touch as Anton Bulaev, Alexander Dambaev and Viktor Kalashnikov swept aside Finland and Sweden to progress to the last four.

The top seeds then narrowly edged past France 237-235 and they will go up against Denmark, 233-231 winners over Spain, for gold.

The only category to buck the Russian trend was the women’s recurve, where 12th seeded Georgia will clash with Ukraine in the final.

Georgia reached the showpiece match with a surprise 5-3 success against the host nation, while Ukraine dumped 2014 silver medallists Germany out of the competition with a slender 5-4 triumph.
