Frenchman Jean-Charles Valladont and Turkey’s Yasemin Anagoz will go into Thursday's (May 26) World Archery European Olympic continental qualifier as the top men’s and women’s seeds respectively after both topped the standings on the first day of the European Archery Championships in Nottingham.

The qualification round for the event in the British city doubled as the ranking stage for the Olympic tournament, being held as part of the main European Championships.

Three men’s and three women’s Rio 2016 quotas will be available.

Valladont was the star performer in men’s recurve as he shrugged off the tough conditions before posting a score of 671 points out of a possible 720.

Turkey’s Mete Gazoz is second going into the European qualifier having managed 670 points, while Dutchman Rick van der Wen is third but will not take part in the Olympic competition as his nation have already qualified a full team for Rio 2016.

“Being first seed for the continental qualifying tournament doesn’t mean a lot yet as only the first three will qualify the place,” Valladont said.

“For me and the French team it’s what really matters: having an individual place here and then looking for a team place in Antalya.

“I could be first, fifth or 10th, but I’ll give all my best to qualify.”

Tuiana Dashidorzhieva of Russia leads the way in the women’s recurve event on 661 points but, like van der Wen, will not participate in the Olympic qualifier as her team have booked their place at this year’s Games.

Seventeen-year-old Anagoz was second with 647, one in front of Germany’s Elena Richter.

The second seeded place for the Rio 2016 qualification tournament went to Anagoz’s team-mate Gulnaz Coskun as she was fifth.

In the men’s compound discipline, Mike Schloesser topped the standings with 700 points, with Croatia’s Domagoj Buden three adrift on 697.

Anton Bulaev of Russia occupies third place on 695.

Reigning outdoor champion Toja Ellison took early command of the women’s event, recording 684 points to finish ahead of Sarah Sonnichsen of Denmark and Viktoriia Diakova of the Ukraine.
