Olympic and world champion Jordan Burroughs was one of five Rio 2016-bound American wrestlers to compete at the seventh annual “United in the Square” competition in New York City’s Times Square today.

The event saw Team USA representatives square off in exhibition matches against opponents from Canada, Iran and South Korea.

It gave them the opportunity to sharpen their skills and help raise money for Beat the Streets, a non-profit organisation that aims to improve the lives and potential of New York City student-athletes through participation in amateur wrestling.

Three-time world champion Burroughs kept his Beat the Streets winning streak intact, defeating Iran’s Peyman Yarahmadi 11-2.

The London 2012 gold medallist, undefeated in six consecutive appearances at the gala, welcomed the chance to test himself against his up-and-coming opponent.

"Right now is a tough period of time, because you start to deal with that complacency," Burroughs, who wrestles at 74 kilograms, told teamusa.org.

"You think, 'man, I’m training, I’m grinding myself down, but I haven’t seen the fruits of my labour because I haven’t competed in a while'.

"You just want to get your hands on someone else, besides the training partners you’re wrestling."

World champions Adeline Gray and Helen Maroulis, two other American wrestlers that are set to represent their country at Rio 2016, beat Canada’s Justina Di Stasio and Samantha Stewart respectively.

Gray, a three-time world champion at 75kg, claimed an 11-0 technical superiority victory over Di Stasio, while Maroulis, the 2015 world champion at 55kg, defeated Stewart 12-0 by a pin.

In Greco-Roman wrestling, two-time world bronze medallist Andy Bisek lost 3-0 against Olympic champion Kim Hyeon-Woo of South Korea in the 75 kg division.

J’den Cox won his 86 kg encounter with Iran’s Meisam Mostafa-Jokar, defeating the 2014 Asian Games champion 10-5.

The Olympic-level matches were the highlights of an evening also included four junior-level matches.
