Olympic flyweight champion Nicola Adams continued her bid for a maiden global title by beating Azerbaijan’s Anna Alimardanova here at the Women’s World Boxing Championships this evening.

The 33-year-old Briton, whose place at Rio 2016 is already secured, comfortably negotiated her way through a tricky encounter with the tall Azeri to claim a 3-0 victory.

She now faces a quarter-final tomorrow against Chinese Taipei’s Yu-Ting Lin, who eased to a unanimous points win against Greece’s Antonia Papoutsaki.

Three-time world champion Cancan Ren of China defeated Russian second seed Elena Saveleva to set up a last-eight encounter with France’s Sarah Ourahmoune, a 3-0 victor at the expense of Armenia’s Anush Grigoryan.

After defeating India’s five-time world champion Mary Kom, German Azize Nimani continued her brilliant run in Kazakhstan’s capital against European champion Marzia Davide of Italy.

Awaiting her in the quarter-finals is home favourite Zhaina Shekerbekova, a convincing 3-0 winner against North Korea’s Hyang Mi Ri.

"I cannot believe I am in the last eight of the World Championships but I know my most important contest is still coming tomorrow," said Nimani, who will book her ticket to Rio 2016 with a win against the Kazakh.

"I am satisfied with my performance against the strong Italian and I will be fighting for my dream tomorrow."

Ireland’s Katie Taylor remained on course for a record sixth world title and a place at Rio 2016 with a unanimous points win against Argentina’s Dayana Sanchez.

Mexico’s Victoria Torres defeated Denmark’s Yvonne Rasmussen and is now all that stands between Taylor and the chance for her to defend her Olympic crown in Rio de Janeiro.

Azerbaijan’s Yana Alekseevna landed the bigger punches in the third and fourth round of her meeting with New Zealand’s Alexis Pritchard.

It earned her a split decision and a quarter-final place against France’s Estelle Mossely, who beat Canada’s Caroline Veyre 3-0 in the last contest of the day.

World light welterweight champion Anastasiia Beliakova of Russia proved too quick for Brazil’s Adriana Dos Santos Araujo and will meet Morocco’s Hasnaa Lachgar for a place in the semi-finals.

Earlier in the afternoon session, light flyweight top seed Marlen Esparza began her quest for a second world title with a 3-0 win over South Korea’s Chorong Bak.

The American will be joined in the quarter-finals by Canadian Kim Klavel, who dug deep to win a close-run match with Romanian third seed and two-time European champion Steluta Duta in the last round.

Defending champion and home favourite Nazym Kyzaibay convincingly beat Sweden’s Lise Sandebjer to reach the next round, where she will meet India's Sarjubala Shamjetsabam.

The Philippines’ former world champion Josie Gabuco also progressed thanks to an impressive performance against Belarus’ Volha Lushchyk.

At light welterweight, Ireland’s Kellie Harrington recovered from losing the first round to comfortably outpoint Germany’s Cindy Rogge.

Great Britain’s Sandy Ryan was equally in control of her bout against Russia’s Daria Abramova, but another tough test lies ahead for a place in the semi-finals in the form of China’s Wenlu Yang.

Yang’s win over the American world youth champion Jajaira Gonzalez was the surprise of the afternoon session, while Canada’s four-time national champion Sara Kali again looked strong as she defeated North Korea’s Kyong Ok Pak.

Kali will meet Ukraine’s in-form Anna Lysenko, a 3-0 winner over Mongolia's Bayantsetseg Nyamjargal, in tomorrow’s quarter-finals.

The session was wrapped up by the heavyweights, with American Shadasia Green going through to a quarter-final match-up against top seed Zenfira Magomedalieva of Russia.

India’s Seema Poonia easily overcame Azerbaijan’s Aynur Rzayeva and will next face second seed Lazzat Kungeibayeva of Kazakhstan.
