Switzerland’s Marcel Hug won the men’s 400 metres T54 title as the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics Grand Prix in Rio de Janeiro came to a close today.

The "Silver Bullet" clocked an unrivalled time of 48.83sec at the meeting, which took place at the newly-renovated Olympic Stadium and served as a Rio 2016 test event.

"It was nice to compete in the stadium today," said Hug.

"It’s been a great week.

"It was good for me because it’s very important to see everything as I’ve never been to Rio or South America before."

The men’s T54 race was one of several 400m events today.

Brazil’s Felipe Gomes continued his impressive form at the meeting, rounding off a hat-trick of sprint wins in the men’s T11 class with a world lead time this year of 51.26.

The 30-year-old beat world champion Daniel Silva to add to his wins over 100m and 200m earlier in the week.

Gomes' compatriot Veronia Hipolito secured her second win on the track in the 400m T38 with a time of 1:04.95.

Earlier in the week, Brazil’s Daniel Tavares Martins took nearly half a second off his own men’s 400m T20 world record.

The 20-year-old world champion was in sensational form as he won his race in 47.78, almost one second ahead of his nearest rival.

Colombia’s Maritza Arango Buitrago took just over one second off her own Americas record set at last year’s IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha as she won the women’s 1,500m T11 in 4:47.98.

In the field, Brazil’s Sandro Varelo de Oliveira set a new Americas record of 34.13m in the men’s discus F55, beating the previous best set almost 10 years ago by 2.72m.

Denmark’s Daniel Jorgensen smashed the long jump T42 world record with a stunning leap of 6.67m.

The 22-year-old added 14 centimetres to his previous best set last June in Italian city Grosseto.

Four Americas records were set by Brazilian athletes on the opening day of action on Wednesday (May 18).

The first record was set in the men’s discus F11 by Alessandro Rodrigo da Silva after the Parapan American Games champion threw 43.16m.

His throw surpassed the previous best set at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games by 2.73m.

Da Silva’s compatriot Luciano dos Santos Pereira took silver with 37.24m, while bronze went to Argentina’s Sergio Hernan Paz with 33.43m.

Odair Santos lowered his own record set at the 2011 World Championships by 0.05 seconds as he eased to victory in the 5,000m T11 class in 15:16.82.

His team-mate Carlos Jose Barto da Silva was second in 16:30.63, while Venezuela’s Darwin Castro was third in 16:37.59.

Julio Cesar Agripino dos Santos also wrote his name into the record books by taking five seconds off the 5,000m T12 Americas record which had stood since the Athens 2004 Paralympics.

A time of 14:55.98 saw him finish ahead of Colombia’s Serna Moreno and Brazil’s Francisco Ortega Jacques, who completed the podium in 15:32.32 and 15:59.67 respectively.

The men’s long jump T38 saw Eduardo Guimaraes de Oliveira first equal the Americas record of 5.41m in the opening round, before breaking it twice in the third and fifth rounds to take the gold with a leap of 5.59m.

His team-mate Pedro Paulo Neves da Silva, the previous record holder, took silver with 5.57m and Venezuela’s Jose Mendoza the bronze with 4.68m.

During four days of competition in Rio de Janeiro, two world, 15 Americas, one European, one African and one Asian record were set.

Attention now switches to Switzerland and the next IPC Athletics Grand Prix which takes place in Nottwil from May 26 to 29.
