United States' Claressa Shields continued her quest for a second successive middleweight global crown with a commanding display against Uzbekistan’s Nafisakhon Askarova here at the Women’s World Boxing Championships this evening.

The London 2012 gold medallist followed up a TKO victory in the previous round by claiming a unanimous points win over her resilient opponent.

She now goes on to face Kazakhstan’s Violleta Knyazeva, a 3-0 winner against Argentina’s Lucia Perez, in the pick of the quarter-finals on Tuesday (May 24).

Great Britain’s Savannah Marshall will take on Chinese favourite Qian Li in the other side of the draw after both emerged victorious from tough battles.

Li defeated double world champion Anna Laurell of Sweden, while Marshall proved too strong for India’s Pooja Rani.

Chinese Taipei’s former junior world champion Nien-Chin Chen again showed her potential with a standout performance against Brazil’s Andreia Bandeira.

"This is my first elite World Championships and my Brazilian opponent was a great boxer," said Chen, who like all her fellow quarter-finalists is just one victory away from securing a place at Rio 2016.

"The timing of my punches was working well so I was confident from the second round.

"Now I am in the last eight, so I’m really satisfied with the performance."

Belarusian Helina Bruyevich’s brave late rally wasn’t enough to halt American Christina Cruz, who successfully negotiated her way to the next round along with second seed Dina Zholaman of Kazakhstan.

A brilliant welterweight contest was played out between Australia’s Jessica Messina and Russia's Saadat Abdulaeva, with the latter eventually finishing an exhausting encounter on top.

Home favourite Valentina Khalzova produced another imperious performance to reach the quarter-finals at the expense of Uzbekistan’s Shahnoza Nizamova.

She now goes on to face Ireland’s Grainne Walsh, who scored an impressive win against former junior world champion Hanna Solecka of Poland.

The US's Naomi Graham had to dig deep to turn around her bout against former world champion Mariia Bova Badulina of Ukraine, and China’s Hong Gu looked in good form on her way to defeating Turkey’s Gulten Turker.

Morrocco’s Soukayna Rabih got the light heavyweights off to a spectacular start, landing some big blows against Canadian Alison Greey to earn a TKO win before the end of the first round.

Liubov Pashina made it three wins out of three for the Russians with a dominant display against Kazakhstan’s Yulduz Mamatkulova.

American Franchon Crews fought her way past Italy's Flavia Severin after which Hungary's Maria Kovacs beat Uzbekistan’s Ezozakhon Melieva as she seeks a third global crown in what will be her last ever appearance at a World Championships.
