Hosts Iran captured the Greco-Roman World Cup title for the fifth time in seven years after thrashing rivals Russia 8-0 in the final in Shiraz.

Saman Abdouli gave Iran their first win of the night with a narrow 2-1 victory over Sergey Emelin at 59 kilograms.

The home nation's second win came courtesy of local hero Omid Noroozi, the London 2012 gold medallist who beat Zaur Kabaloev 7-2.

Afshin Byabangard claimed a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Abuiazid Mantsigov at 71kg to further extend Iran's advantage.

Irakliy Kalandiya was unable to compete for Russia at 75kg due to injury, handing Saeid Abdvali victory and putting Iran into a 4-0 lead.

The deciding match of the meet was between Iran’s Ramin Taherisartang and Ramazan Abacharaev at 80kg with the former’s 6-4 win sealing his country's success.

Habibollah Akhlaghi beat Sosruko Kodzokov at 85kg to make it 6-0 and the rout was completed by Ghasem Rezaei and Bashir Babajanzadeh Darzi, who overcame Kantemir Magomedov and Sergey Semenov at 98kg and 130kg respectively.

"We were deserved to win World Cup trophy," said Rasoul Khadem, President of the Iran Wrestling Federation.

"I should thank the Shiraz people who supported us well during the tournament."

Before this year, Iran had captured the World Cup team title in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014.

Russia had purposely not sent their best wrestlers to the competition in order to prepare for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

"It was our third or fourth team," said Russia's Greco-Roman head coach Gogi Koguashvili.

"Our main wrestlers are training for the Olympic Games and the best Russian team will show off at the Olympic Games."

Turkey edged Kazakhstan to place third, while Belarus overcame defending champions Azerbaijan to take fifth spot and Ukraine defeated Germany to finish seventh.

Russia advanced to the final from Group A having defeated Belarus, Germany and Kazakhstan by the same scoreline of 7-1.

In Group B, Iran beat Ukraine 8-0, Azerbaijan 7-1 and Turkey 7-1.
