Great Britain’s Giles Scott has become the second most successful sailor in the Finn Gold Cup’s 60-year history after defending his world title with a day to spare in Gaeta in Italy.

The 28-year-old won two of the three races on the penultimate day of action to establish an unassailable 21-point lead over second-placed Jonas Hogh-Christensen of Denmark - before successfully navigating the medals race.

"I keep saying it but the Gold Cup is such a special event to all of us as Finn sailors and to be in a position to say that I've won four is a very privileged one to be in," said Scott, who only needs to complete tomorrow’s race to confirm his triumph.

"I think there is an awful lot of talent in the Finn fleet at the moment and to be able to come out on top of that is great."

Success for Scott puts him two wins behind compatriot Ben Ainslie, the four-time Olympic gold medallist who heads Britain’s America’s Cup team.

"I was very much aware of it," he said.

"It was certainly nice to take that step up to that and be one step below my boss.

"But it’s great.

"I think if you had taken me back eight years and told me that I was going to win one World Championship I would probably have shaken your hand there and said thank you very much, but to win four is just great."

Scott’s victory, his third in succession, was even more pleasing for him given that he finished 38th on day one after finding himself on the wrong side of a 30 degree wind shift.

"When you start off with a 38th there are an awful lot of people in front of you that you’ve got to get past," he added.

"I would be lying if I said there wasn’t doubt in my mind, but fortunately, I managed to up my game I suppose and be consistent and sail well, sail the right way and sail fast."
