Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee vice-president Chingiz Huseynzada has said he is confident the body will deliver a successful Islamic Solidarity Games next year, when Baku stages the multi-sport event.

Huseynzada was speaking on the back of a week-long event organised by the Azerbaijan Islamic Solidarity Games Operations Committee (AISGOC), which welcomed NOCs from 39 Islamic states to the host city.

Participants had the opportunity to learn more about the preparations for the Games, which are scheduled to take place from May 12 to 22, 2017, as well as undertake competition venue tours and enjoy Azerbaijan’s hospitality.

More than 70 delegates from 39 different countries took part in the event, which included an official "One Year to Go" milestone reception.

"We were happy to have welcomed so many visitors to Baku in this momentous week for Baku 2017," said Huseynzada, who also serves as second vice-president of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF).

"We now have less than one year to go until the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku and I am certain that the NOCs were delighted with the facilities on offer to their athletes and we are confident of putting on a successful event next year."

The fourth edition of the Games is expected to attract up to 5,000 athletes from Islamic states around the world.

They will be representing their nations in 20 different sports, including 24 disciplines, across 16 venues in Azerbaijan’s capital.

Baku was awarded the Games at the ISSF's General Assembly in Saudi Arabian city Jeddah in July 2013.

The Organising Committee was set up by the decree of Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and is being led by the First Lady of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva.

AISGOC will organise and run the Games in cooperation with the ISSF.
