The 19-year-old headed into the competition in Canada looking to continue her unbeaten record, which stretches back to the 2014 Grand Prix event in Poland’s capital Warsaw.

Vio remained on course to achieve the feat after booking her place in the gold medal contest, where she would face the challenge of China’s Fang Yao.

Despite the best efforts of the Chinese fencer, Vio eventually emerged as a 15-13 victor as she warms up to defend her European title in front of a home crowd in Torino from May 17 to 22.

Although Fang fell to defeat in the gold medal contest, the Chinese team enjoyed huge success at the World Cup with Paralympic champion Yijun Chen delivering a strong display in the men’s category A sabre final.

Chen was able to earn revenge for his defeat at last month’s Asian Championships to his team-mate Jianquan Tian, by securing a narrow 15-12 victory to claim gold.

The result also sealed his spot at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games via the world rankings, with his defeat last month having seen him miss out on claiming an automatic place.

China’s Gang Sun proved to be one of the stars of the World Cup after earning a 15-4 win over Hungary’s Richard Osvath in the men’s category A foil final, before beating Russia’s Maxim Shaburov 15-13 in the epee gold medal match.

In the women’s foil, China’s Jing Rong delivered a shock result by beating world number one Zsuzsanna Krajnyak of Hungary 15-9.

Germany’s Simone Briese-Baetke aided her chances of reaching the Paralympic Games, having missed a year of competition due to illness, as she triumphed in the women’s epee event, beating Poland’s Marta Makowska 15-12.

The result saw her move into the qualification spots for the Games, with  the event having offered fencers the final chance of earning Paralympic qualification points.
