Barclays, Gatwick Airport and law firm Irwin Mitchell have all signed on as sponsors of brand-new mass-participation event Parallel London, it has been announced.

Barclays, one of the leading multinational banks, will act as the headline partner of the event’s technology zone, where a series of activities will be on offer to participants.

Gatwick Airport have joined with Parallel London, which will include multiple running and walking distance events for all ages and abilities, from 100 metres to 10 kilometres, as one of two supporting partners along with Irwin Mitchell.

Organisers are hoping more companies and businesses will sponsor the event at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, scheduled to take place on September 4, just three days before the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

“Our ambition is to make Parallel London one of the most celebrated and innovative events in the UK, which can also play a significant role in removing barriers in our society,” Parallel London founder Andrew Douglass said.

“I couldn’t wish for three more dedicated and dynamic partners who not only share our ambition, but also our passion to move inclusivity from the margins into the mainstream.”

As well as the races themselves, Parallel London will feature several “environments”, which will include a range of sessions on food and drink, fitness and healthy lifestyles, family and quiet spaces and culture, art and literature.

It has been claimed that the Parallel London event is the first of its kind worldwide.

Parallel London are also aiming to attract high numbers of participants with disabilities, something which appealed to Barclays and helped them decide to sponsor the event.

“It’s so energising to work with such a great team who share our commitment to empowering people with disabilities,” Elaine Draper, director of accessibility and inclusion at Barclays, said.

“We are delighted to sponsor the technology zone as we are passionate about harnessing digital technology to eliminate historic barriers to accessibility.

“The zone will showcase the latest in accessible gadgetry and tech, including our very own Eagle Lab ‘maker space’ providing an opportunity for everyone to discover the fun and creativity of 3D printing.”

The event costs £20 ($29/€25) for adults, £15 ($22/€19) for youths between 14 and 16 years of age and £10 ($14/€13) for children aged between five and 13.

Infants, aged up to four, are free.
