Greek qualifiers Vicky Arvaniti and Peny Karagouni gained two shock victories today as main draw group action began at the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Sochi Open.

The duo, seeded 24th after coming through yesterday's qualifiers, overcame ninth-seeded Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler of Germany 21-19, 27-29, 15-13 in their opening match of the day.

They then continued their form, coming back from a set down and 5-9 in the tie-break to stun Russia's Evgeniya Ukolova and Ekaterina Birlova, eventually winning 17-21, 22-20, 15-13.

United States pair Brittany Hochevar and Jennifer Fopma were another to pull off a shock win in the women's draw today.

The 18th seeds overcame second-ranked Kinga Kolosinska and Monika Brzostek of Poland, 21-17, 21-17.

German top seeds Karla Borger and Britta Buethe of Germany remain undefeated, however, after two comfortable victories.

They swept past qualifiers Eunyce and Barbara of Brazil 21-16, 21-17 before a 21-18, 21-19 win over Slovakia's Natalia Dubovcova and Dominika Nestarcova.

There were few surprises in the one round of the men's tournament taking place today.

Austria's Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst, the number one seeds, swept past Estonia's Kusti Nolvak and Mart Tiisaar 21-14, 21-12, while Spain's second seeds Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira routed Iaroslav Gordieiev and Mykola Babich of Ukraine 21-9, 21-13.

Also victorious were the US third seeds Tri Bourne and John Hyden, who won 21-15, 21-19 over Serbia's Stefan Basta and Lazar Kolaric.

Two rounds of men's action and one women's are scheduled for tomorrow before the elimination stage begins on Friday (May 6).
