Former champions Cuba Domadores will aim to reach their third consecutive World Series of Boxing (WSB) final when they play host to a two-legged last-four encounter against Uzbek Tigers tomorrow and Friday (May 6).

The Season IV winners and last year’s runners-up have dropped just three bouts this season, all of which came in a surprise group stage defeat at the hands of Ukraine Otamans.

WSB newcomers Uzbek Tigers will be looking to upset the odds though at the Coliseo de la Ciudad Deportiva in Havana as they aim to book their place in a final at the first attempt.

A superb 6-4 away win against the Russia Boxing Team earned them a place in the semi-finals, which begin tomorrow with the light flyweight, bantamweight, light welterweight, middleweight and heavyweight boxers all in action.

The first bout of the match is arguably one of the most important, with Domadores' light flyweight Joahnys Oscar Argilagos up against Tigers' Nodirjon Mirzakhmedov.

At just 19 years-old, world champion Argilagos already has 11 WSB bouts and eight wins under his belt.

He showed his steel once again by coming through a tough quarter-final encounter with Mexico Guerreros' Elwin Soto a fortnight ago.

Twenty-two-year-old Mirzakhmedov claimed silver at the Uzbekistan National Championships at the end of last year, and was superb against Azerbaijan Baku Fires' Rasul Saliev in Week 10, using his nimble footwork to great effect.

That speed is something Mirzakhmedov will most likely need to reproduce if he is to get a result against Argilagos in tomorrow evening’s opener.

Another of the Cuban team’s big names, Erislandy Savon, has been in excellent form en route to his semi-final showdown with International Boxing Association (AIBA) junior world champion Mirzobek Khasanov.

Savon won gold and an Olympic place at the AIBA American Olympic Qualification Event in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires, and after defeating Ukraine Otamans' Dmytro Lisovyi in the group stages, he took his heavyweight quarter-final by walkover against Mexico Guerreros' Julio Castillo.

Tigers' Khasanov missed out on a quarter-final appearance against the Russian Boxing Team, but he can lay claim to a TKO win over Puerto Rico Hurricanes' Jose Rosado and a points' victory against Astana Arlans Kazakhstan’s Yerkin Mukhametzhan in the group stages.

Tomorrow’s three other bouts will see bantamweight Robeisy Ramirez, light welterweight Luis Oliva Gener and middleweight Arlen Lopez vie for home wins against Murodjon Akhmadaliev, Fazliddin Gaibnazarov and Ulugbek Khakberdiev respectively.

The second semi-final, between British Lionhearts and Astana Arlans Kazakhstan, is due to take place in London’s York Hall on May 26 and 27.
